Two dozen cars with Russian license plates were not allowed into Lithuania in one day

In accordance with the explanation of the European Commission regarding restrictions on the entry of vehicles from Russia, from Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning, customs officers did not allow 19 cars with Russian license plates into Lithuania.

“Of these, 17 are through the road post to Kibartai (Chernyshevskoye on the Russian side), one is through the Medininkai road post (Kamenny Log on the Belarusian side), one is through the Lavorishkes (Kotlovka) road post. Customs still does not allow cars with Russian license plates through,” customs spokeswoman Irmina Frolova-Milashene told BNS on Wednesday.

According to an EC clarification presented late last week, cars purchased or registered in Russia cannot be imported into the European Union. The document states, among other things, that the ban also applies to personal belongings - Lithuanian politicians say they will ask the EC for further clarification on the recent bans.

Starting Monday, customs will not allow vehicles with Russian license plates to enter Lithuania, except in cases of transit to or from the Kaliningrad region.

Director General of the Customs Department Darius Zvironas said in an interview with radio station LRT on Wednesday that if drivers of cars with Russian license plates do not obey the legal instructions of officials, administrative proceedings will be initiated, and these cars will be detained and possibly confiscated by court order.

According to Žvironas, Lithuania is “one step ahead” compared to other countries. On Tuesday, according to him, negotiations were held with customs officers of Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Poland.

It was previously reported that Estonia will prohibit the entry into the country of vehicles with license plates of the Russian Federation from 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
